Zamfara State gold mine collapse death toll has risen to 13, as Nigerian government vows crackdown on illegal mining after deadly pit collapse that leaves two still trapped.

At least 13 miners have been confirmed dead after a mine pit collapsed in Jabaka village, Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Nigerian authorities said Sunday.

Two other miners remain trapped underground, as rescue operations continue. The federal government has deployed mines officers and first responders to the site, working alongside Zamfara State officials to recover the remaining victims.

Bandits in Zamfara State on Thursday attacked a police outpost in Magami community in Gusau, Zamfara capital, reportedly seizing the phones of police officers on duty.

The Governor Bello Matawalle led-Zamfara State Government has announced the suspension of the Emir of Birnin ‘Yandoto of Tsafe Local Government Area, Aliyu Marafa, over his decison to confer a chieftaincy title to a ‘notorious bandit leader’.

Secretary to the State Government, Kabiru Sardauna, made this announcement in a statement which was made available to Africa Daily News, New York on Monday.

As part of measures to tackle insecurity, Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle, has approved the death penalty for bandits, kidnapper among several others.

The governor appended his signature to the law on Tuesday in Gusau, shortly after the House of Assembly recommended the death penalty for criminal elements.

Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle has declared a work-free week to enable public and civil servants to register and obtain their Permanent Voter Card (PVCs) ahead of next year’s general elections.

Matawalle Confirmed As Winner APC Guber Primary In Zamfara

Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle has been declared the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in next year’s general election. 

The Chairman Electoral Committee for the APC governorship primary election in the state, Babagana Tijani, made the announcement on Thursday. He disclosed that Matawalle polled 733 votes to emerge as the winner of the primary election.

The governor secured the ticket for his second term bid unopposed as other aspirants in the race withdrew from the contest as a result of the consensus arrangement which the APC in Zamfara State adopted as the mode of the exercise.
