Cuba-US Relations Backslide Five Years After Landmark Thaw

Five years ago this week, Washington and Havana surprised the world when they agreed to reopen diplomatic ties severed in 1961, but relations have since slid downhill as if on a fresh layer of Cold War ice.

United States President Donald Trump has regularly assailed Cuba on Twitter and tightened sanctions over the Communist-run island’s human rights record and its support for Venezuela’s socialist regime.

President Miguel Diaz-Canel, who assumed power last year amid high hopes of reform, has in turn cracked down on dissidents.

Relations are at “a very low point” the top Cuban diplomat with responsibility for relations …

• Abia residents lament forfeiture of assets to FG

Reactions poured in yesterday in the wake of the 12-year jail term bagged by a former Abia State governor Orji Uzor Kalu for fraud. For the Buhari Media Organisation (BMO), the conviction was proof of President Muhammadu Buhari’s sincerity in fighting corruption, even as some residents in the state described the forfeiture of assets to the Federal Government as unfair.

In a statement signed by its Chairman Niyi Akinsiju and Secretary Cassidy Madueke, BMO said the conviction of a high ranking APC chieftain proves that the courts are independent in this

If the reports of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG3) and World Health Organisation (WHO) on the good health and child and maternal mortality rates are to be taken seriously, initiatives that support women of childbearing age to safely deliver their babies must be emulated not only by the government, but also by corporate institutions in Nigeria.

According to a 2010 report by the WHO, the infant mortality rate in …

Let me thank the leadership of the United States Institute of Peace – President Nancy Lindborg, Ambassador Johnnie Carson and the team for the continuing interest in Nigeria’s democratic journey and particularly for the privilege of speaking at this important event. It is always a pleasure to return from the blast furnace of Nigerian politics to the rarefied atmosphere of intellectual engagements.

I’ve Been Living With Diabetes For Over 30 Years – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday morning led hundreds of people on road walk for diabetes awareness … The significance of this public awareness, championed by a national figure and a former president, cannot be overemphasised. This public declaration by Obasanjo, about his health, when other public figures and politicians would hardly do so, provided more information on diabetes. Another interesting part of that day was when, the former chairman of Diabetes Association of Nigeria (DAN), Professor Sunny Chieneye, in a lecture titled ‘Women and Diabetic: Our Right to Healthy Living’, called for concerted efforts to check the menace of …

NY: Marines Allow Umbrellas For Men Since 200 Years

Male Marines will no longer be forced to get soaked when there’s an umbrella handy.

For the first time in the more than 200-year history of the Corps, male Marines will be allowed to wield umbrellas while in uniform, according to CNN. Previously, only female Marines were permitted to carry out basic wetness-protection tactics.

Now, thanks to an update in uniform regulations, men in the Corps can join women in carrying a small “all black, plain, standard or collapsible umbrella … during inclement weather with the service and dress uniforms.” Umbrellas are still not permitted with camouflage uniforms.

The separate terrorism threat level for Northern Ireland remains “severe”.

Onitsha Ofala: Globacom’s 9 Years Of Cultural Fanfare

In leaps and bounds, the Onitsha Ofala celebration has grown over the years to become one of the biggest traditional festivals in Black Africa, and, unarguably, the biggest festival in South East Nigeria. The recent success story of Ofala is attributable, to a large extent, to the ingenuity of the giant telecommunications network, Globacom, which has in the past nine years supported the festival as the major corporate sponsor, and the innovativeness of the custodian of the festival, the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe.

The uniqueness of Ofala is not only embedded in the razzmatazz that characterises the …

APC May Not Survive Beyond Buhari Years – Okorocha

Former Governor of Imo State, Owelle Rochas Okoracha has said that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) may not sustain its political dominance beyond the Buhari years.

The former governor, who spoke on Saturday in Kano, hinged his fears on the fact that the ruling party has not been able to evolve an alternative political force that has both the appeal and integrity of President Muhammad Buhari.

He recalled that the APC was hurriedly put together ahead of the 2015 general elections by different political parties and interests saying that their success was a result of their common resolve and …
