Majority Women Among Candidates Still In Running To Head WTO

Three women — two Africans and a South Korean — have been selected among the five candidates still in the running to take the helm of the World Trade Organisation, diplomatic sources told AFP Saturday.

No woman, and no African, has ever headed the global trade body.

The initial pool of eight candidates to replace Roberto Azevedo, who stepped down as WTO chief last month a year ahead of schedule, was whittled down to five Friday.

Meet Candidates For The World Trade Organisation DG Position

Nominations for the Office of Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) has officially closed. As at close of nomination on July 8 2020, eight nominees from different countries had indicated interests.
The outgoing DG, Azevedo, will be stepping down on August 31, 2020.

Nominees are expected to answer questions from the General Council (involving all its member states) and the Press between 15-17 July, 2020. Several rounds of consultations will follow until a consensus is announced. The DG’s role is expected to be primarily advisory, managerial and renewable after 4 years

WTO Reacts To Okonjo-Iweala’s Nomination As DG

The World Trade Organisation (WTO) has accepted the nomination of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for the position of its director general, in spite of a protest by Egypt.

Africa Daily News had reported that President Muhammadu Buhari had approved Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s nomination for the position of director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

However, the Egyptian government which nominated Mr. Abdel-Hamid Mamdouh for the same position, had opposed Okonjo-Iweala’s nomination on grounds of it being belated.
