World Cup Play-Off: FIFA Reject Algeria’s Replay Appeal

Algeria’s desperate bid to have their World Cup play-off game with Cameroon replayed has hit the brick wall after the appeal was rejected by the competition organisers FIFA, the Algerian Football Federation have confirmed.

Africa Daily News, New York recalls that Algeria actually won the first leg of the play-off 1-0 in March only to be beaten 2-1 in the return leg to miss out on one of the five berths at the finals for African nations.

Qatar’s 2022 World Cup ‘Diamond In The Desert’ Stadium Completed

Qatar’s third venue for the 2022 World Cup — the Education City Stadium — has been completed.

Dubbed the “Diamond in the Desert,” the 40,000-seat ground is one of eight stadiums to be used in the competition.

The stadium features a triangular-design with complex, diamond-like patterns and, as the sun moves across the sky, the façade will appear to change color.

French World Cup Winner Matuidi Catches Coronavirus

France World Cup winner Blaise Matuidi has tested positive for coronavirus but is currently asymptomatic, his club Juventus confirmed on Tuesday.

“Matuidi has undergone medical tests that have revealed his positivity to the Coronavirus-COVID-19,” the Italian champions said in a statement.

Juve added 32-year-old Matuidi, who lifted the World Cup in 2018, is currently “in voluntary home isolation”.

The midfielder’s club teammate Daniele Rugani was the first top-flight footballer to be diagnosed with coronavirus last Wednesday, sending the entire team into quarantine.
