The United Nations Industrial Development (UNIDO), has challenged the Waste Management Society of Nigeria (WAMASON) to ensure the enforcement of National Policy on Waste Management developed by the Federal Ministry of Environment.

NABDA invents technology for waste conversion to biogas

The National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA) has invented an Anaerobic Digestion Technology (ADT) digesters which can convert organic wastes to biogas.

The invention is spearheaded by the Environmental Biotechnology and Bioconservation Department (EBD) of the agency

Speaking at the unveiling of the prototype biodigesters and biomethane process optimisation test systems on Tuesday in Abuja, head of the department, Dr Gloria Obioh said the three modular digesters (BEGS L250, BEGS L500 and BEGS L1000) were all designed and fabricated by the scientist in the department.

Handwashing without soap a waste – UNICEF

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)  on Wednesday  advised Nigerians to use soap or ash and running water to was hands after defecation to prevent infection and illness.
Mr  Bioye Ogunjobi, a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Specialist with UNICEF,  gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
Ogunjobi said that using water alone is not proper hand washing technique as it could not totally clean the hand.
According to him, faeces is oily and cannot easily come off after using tissue paper or water to clean-up after defecation.

Osinbajo unveils $8 million Liquid Waste Facility in Rivers

The federal government has said it would continue to pursue the ease of doing business policy with diligence to keep solving the problems of operating environment, boost productivity and encourage investors.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo stated this yesterday in Port Harcourt during the unveiling of the Port Harcourt Dockyard Liquid Waste Treatment Plant.

The Guardian gathered that $8 million was invested in setting up the facility, which would help clean up the maritime industry by collecting oil wastes and transforming them into meaningful by-products.

UNN sets record of electricity generation with waste

The University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) has in Nigeria, set the record of electricity generation by using organic waste to install 100KVA Refuse Drived Fuel (RDF) gasification plant for its Nsukka Campus.

Prof Benjamin Ozumba, UNN Vice-Chancellor, commended the project during its inauguration and said the university would no longer be a customer to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).

According to him, the project is first of its kind in Nigeria and another feather added to the cap of the institution.
