Marburg Virus: Nigeria At Low Risk – NCDC

The Federal Government of Nigeria on Friday disclosed that the country is at low odds of an outbreak of the Marburg virus contrary to widely held fears of an outbreak.

Africa Daily News, New York understands that Marburg, a highly dangerous pathogen that causes haemorrhagic fever, was first identified in Germany in 1967 and was recently confirmed in Guinea.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily which was monitored by Africa Daiily News, New York, the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, said that the government is closely monitoring the situation.

WHO Holds Emergency Meeting Over Virus Variants

The World Health Organization’s emergency committee met, two weeks ahead of schedule, on Thursday to discuss the urgent threat from rapidly-spreading new coronavirus variants.

Newly identified mutations of the virus, which experts believe to be significantly more infectious, come as spiking case numbers force many countries to enforce new restrictions and lockdowns.

The committee normally gathers every three months but the WHO brought the meeting forward to discuss the mutations.

Spain Hits Over 13,000 Coronavirus Deaths

For four consecutive days, the number of Coronavirus deaths in Spain has nose-dived raising hope that the days of the virus in the country are numbered.

Monday’s increase of 637 deaths means 13,055 have died in total, BBC reports.

Spain has recorded over 135,000 confirmed cases of Coronavirus, the most in Europe, but new infections have been slowing.

In Italy, the number of new infections fell by 1,031 to 1,941 on Monday, but the death toll rose to 636 – more than 100 higher than the previous day.

Coronavirus: Nigeria Finally Speaks On New Virus

The Nigerian government has finally enlightened citizens on Coronavirus, the new virus threatening the world.

THISDAY reported that the government had remained silent on the disease which was first reported in China mid-December.

The disease has spread to some Asian countries and the first case reported in the United States on Tuesday.

An advisory by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Wednesday, said the World Health Organization (WHO) has convened an Emergency Committee to determine whether this outbreak should be declared a “Public Health Event of International Concern” (PHEIC).

Ezuma, the founder of Jesus Intervention  Household Ministry in Ejigbo, was arrested at his residence after an informant notified the police he had resurfaced.

It was gathered that the suspect climbed his ceiling where he hid for over two hours to evade arrest when detectives from Ejigbo Division stormed his home a few days ago.

He was forced out of the ceiling after the policemen that went called for reinforcement in order to drag him out of his hiding place.
