US to send hospital ship to Venezuela to help refugees

A U.S. Navy hospital ship will embark on another humanitarian mission to help countries cope with an influx of Venezuelans fleeing a deep economic and political crisis, the Trump administration announced Tuesday.

The USNS Comfort will leave in June on a 5-month mission to South America, Central America and the Caribbean to help countries “overwhelmed” by the more than 3 million Venezuelan refugees who have fled in recent years, Vice President Mike Pence said.

The battle for control of Venezuela rages on. Opposition leader Juan Guaido called for protesters to return to the streets, a day after he stood with a group of soldiers and announced an uprising to seize power from embattled President Nicolas Maduro.

But Maduro says the “coup” attempt by Guaido — who is the head of Venezuela’s National Assembly — was put down by the military.

In a televised speech, Maduro rejected claims he’s lost control of the military, and he accused “imperialist” forces of trying to take over the country.

It’s as if Venezuela is trying to close itself off from the world. President Nicolas Maduro said he will close Venezuela’s border with Brazil in a bid to stop foreign aid deliveries. He’s also thinking about closing the border with Colombia.
