MTN, Banks’ Fallout: Communications Minister Wades In

Nigeria’s Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, has assured that the inability of MTN users to use the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) channel will be resolved soon.

According to Pantami, the issue emanated from a fallout between MTN Nigeria and some banks.

He went on to reveal that he has intervened in the feud and the situation will soon be resolved.

Commercial banks and mobile network operators have commenced discussion on how the ₦17bn accumulated debt for Unstructured Supplementary Service Data access will be paid.

Findings showed the two parties would reach an agreement on modalities for payment soon.

Confirming this to The PUNCH, the Chairman, Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria, Gbenga Adebayo, said, ‘Discussions are ongoing and we are hoping that this will result in settlement. But certainly, the banks are indebted to telcos.’
