Defamation: Judge Awards $15m In Damages To Johnny Depp

A US jury yesterday found both Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard liable for defamation — but sided more strongly with the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star following an intense trial riding on bitterly contested allegations of domestic abuse.

The verdict marked the end of a bitterly-fought six-week trial riding on lurid claims and counterclaims of between the Hollywood celebrities.

The seven-member jury in Virginia awarded the 58-year-old actor $15 million in damages after finding that a 2018 article penned by Heard on her experience of “sexual violence” was defamatory to Depp.

U.S. DOJ To Investigate Police Response To Uvalde Shootings

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has announced a review of the entirety of the response by local and federal authorities to last week’s school shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

In a statement on Sunday that was sighted by Africa Daily News, New York, DOJ spokesperson Anthony Coley said that Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin had asked the department to conduct a Critical Incident Review.

Coley also said that the DOJ’s Office of Community Oriented Policing will handle the investigation.

The United States has requested that an emergency UN Security Council meeting be held on Wednesday to discuss North Korea, according to diplomats, amid fears that Pyongyang will resume nuclear testing in the coming weeks.

Russia’s defence ministry on Sunday claimed that it had struck at weapons which were supplied to Ukraine by the United States and European countries and also destroyed a runway at a military airfield near the Ukrainian city of Odessa.

The ministry narrated that it used high-precision Onyx missiles to strike the airfield, after Ukraine accused Russia of knocking out a newly-constructed runway at the main airport of Odessa last week.

The regional of Governor Odessa, Maksym Marchenko also claimed that Russia had used a Bastion missile, launched from Crimea.
