UNILAG: Buhari Hailed For Removing VC Ogundipe, Babalakin

The Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership (CACOL) has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his decision on the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

On Friday, Buhari ordered the Governing Council Chairman, Wale Babalakin and the Vice Chancellor, Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, to vacate their positions.

CACOL Director of Administration, Tola Oresanwo, in a statement on Sunday, said this would calm frayed nerves at the institution.

CACOL stressed that the presidential directive was needed to stop the crisis from getting out of control.

The Senate of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, and all its four staff unions, on Thursday, jointly kicked against the appointment of a new vice-chancellor for the university, saying the office is not vacant.

They also called on President Muhammadu Buhari, who is the visitor to the university to prevail on the chairman of the governing council, Dr Wale Babalakin, on the matter, so as not to degenerate to chaos nor breakdown of law and order in the university.

Four labour Unions of the University of Lagos have condemned the purported removal of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, by the governing council, describing it as unjust and illegal.

This is contained in a statement jointly issued at the end of a joint meeting of the four staff unions, on Thursday in Lagos.

The four unions are the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Senior Staff Union of Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the National Association of Academic Technologies (NATTS).

UNILAG Announces Acting Vice-Chancellor

The management of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, has announced that Professor Theophilus Omololu Soyombo of the Faculty of Social Sciences has been appointed as the acting the Vice-Chancellor of the University.

This is coming after the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olawatoyin Ogundipe, was sacked by the governing council of the institution during a meeting which was presided over by its Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Dr. Wale Babalakin on Wednesday.

Following the development, Ogundipe in a terse statement,  had declared that the council’s decision “is untrue and a figment of its imagination.”
