US Hits 5M COVID-19 Cases As Trump Is Criticised Over Relief Package

The United States on Sunday reached the extraordinary milestone of five million coronavirus cases as President Donald Trump was accused of flouting the constitution by unilaterally extending a virus relief package.

The US has been hammered by the COVID-19 pandemic, recording nearly 163,000 deaths — by far the highest of any country, ahead only of Brazil, which on Saturday became the second country to pass 100,000 deaths.

The global death toll is at least 727,288 since the novel coronavirus emerged in China last December, according to a running tally from official sources compiled by AFP.

Central African Rebel Leader Sanctioned Over Human Rights Abuse

The United States has imposed sanctions against Bi Sidi Souleymane, the leader of the Return, Reclamation, Rehabilitation (3R) rebel group in the Central African Republic.

According to a statement by Secretary of State Michael Pompeo on Friday, the group is accused of committing numerous human rights abuses and displacing thousands in the troubled country since 2015.

The sanctions freeze the rebel leader’s assets and impose a travel ban on Souleymane, also known as Sidiki Abbas. Souleymane directly perpetrated torture, the statement said.

The United States on Wednesday imposed sanctions on one of Zimbabwe’s top businessmen and political operators, accusing him of abetting corruption that plagues the nation.

The move against Kudakwashe Tagwirei comes days after Zimbabwe thwarted protests called by a small opposition party over graft and a slumping economy.

China vowed to retaliate Wednesday after the United States ordered the closure of its consulate in Houston, a move that further inflamed tensions between the two superpowers.

Police in the United States on Friday said they have arrested a former personal assistant to Fahim Saleh, suspected to have killed the Gokada founder.

Saleh’s personal assistant, Tyrese Devon Haspil, 21, arrested on Friday, is expected to be charged in a criminal complaint with second-degree murder and other crimes, New York Times reported.

The Gokada CEO was discovered dead on Tuesday afternoon by his sister inside his $2.25 million condo in a luxury building on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, the police said.

The European Court of Justice could on Thursday pause the transfer of private data between the European Union and the United States in a case involving Facebook.

According to reports, the court is to rule in a case initiated by Austrian privacy activist Maximilian Schrems.

He complained to Irish authorities that his Facebook data, which were compiled by Facebook Ireland, were transferred to its U.S. branch without his permission.

Schrems argues that because American intelligence agencies can access Facebook users’ private data, EU citizens’ data are not sufficiently protected and that there is no means of appeal for this transfer.…

A squirrel in Colorado, United States has tested positive for the bubonic plague, the CNN has reported.

According to the report, the squirrel tested positive on July 11 in the town of Morrison, marking the first case of plague in the county this year.

Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH) department announced the development.

JCPH warns the public that it can infect both humans and animals if proper precautions are not taken.

9 Nigerians Stopped From Boarding Evacuation Flight

Nine Nigerians on Friday night were excluded from the second evacuation flight from the United States for flouting Government’s COVID-19 guidelines.

Among them is a family of five, according to Mr. Benaoyagha Okoyen, the Consul General of Nigeria in New York, who oversaw the evacuation activities.

Okoyen told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the airport that they were not allowed to check-in after five of them failed to present a negative coronavirus test result.

U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures fell 10 cents, or 0.3 per cent, to $39.72 a barrel at 0148 GMT, trimming a 1.4 per cent rise from Wednesday.

Although the United States is the world leader in coronavirus cases with close to 2.6 million, its Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC said the figure is the tip of the iceberg.
