Uganda Is Looking For Investors To Restart A Copper Mine

Uganda said Tuesday that it is looking for expressions of interest from investors to reopen a massive copper mine in the country’s western region, which also has large cobalt resources.

Government geologists believe that the Kilembe mine, located in the foothills of the ice-capped Rwenzori mountains on the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has around 4 million tones of ore containing 1.98 percent copper and 0.17 percent cobalt.

Uganda’s finance and mining ministers said in a joint statement:

“We have invited companies to express their interest in partnering with the government through a mineral production sharing agreement.”

On Monday, Uganda registered two new Covid-19 deaths bringing the total number of deaths to 15.

The two fatalities are both Uganda males aged 63 and 33 years old. The total number of cases stand at 1,560 with 1,411 recoveries.

The Ministry of Works and Transport on Monday warned it would shut down public transport again because of non-compliance with Covid-19 guidelines.

Uganda Records High Spike In Coronavirus Cases

Uganda authorities confirmed eight new cases of the novel coronavirus late Monday.

This takes the national total to nine in three days.

Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng announced the latest figures at a press conference in the capital, Kampala.

The new cases were found after 35 samples were tested Monday.

“All eight cases are Ugandan nationals who travelled back from Dubai, the United Arab Emirates — two on March 20 and six on March 22,” she said.

Aceng said that to date, 2,661 travellers identified as potential risks, including Ugandans, are under either self-quarantine or institutional quarantine.
