Mixed Reactions As Russia Pulls Back Troops In Kharkiv

Russia’s Defense Ministry on Sunday morning announced that it has resolved to pull back troops from two areas in Ukraine’s eastern Kharkiv region where a Ukrainian counter-offensive has made tremendous advances in the past week. 

Africa Daily News, New York reports that the news is coming days after of apparent advances by Ukraine south of Kharkiv, the country’s second-largest city, in what could become the biggest battlefield success for Ukrainian forces since they thwarted a Russian attempt to seize the capital of Kyiv at the start of the almost seven-months war.

The Defence Headquarters said the troops of Operation Lafiya Dole, have eliminated 16 Boko Haram/Islamic States West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorist and arrested 11 in the North East in the last one week.

The Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. John John Enenche, disclosed this while giving weekly update on the operations of Armed Forces of Nigeria on Friday in Abuja.

UN Begins Withdrawing Troops From Protection Sites In S/Sudan

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) said Friday it has begun withdrawing troops from various camps around the country where tens of thousands of civilians sought protection during its civil war.

The camps were set up in the capital Juba and other key cities after civil war erupted in 2013, prompting thousands to flee to UN bases in search of protection, particularly from brutal ethnic atrocities which characterised the conflict.

Denmark Redeploys Troops To Kuwait

Denmark says it will temporarily redeploy most of its 130-strong forces from Iraq to neighbouring Kuwait for security reasons.

Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, made this known on Wednesday.

“This is based on advice from the Danish military leadership,” Frederiksen said.

About 30 to 40 Danish troops are to remain at the Ain al-Asaad Airbase in Western Iraq, while others are to be redeployed to neighbouring Kuwait, NAN reports.

Iran Vs US: America Reportedly Withdraws Troops From Kuwait

Kuwait’s Defense Minister on Wednesday said it has received a letter from the Commander-in-Chief of a U.S. military camp in Kuwait “declaring imminent withdrawal of all U.S. military forces in three days,”

The state news agency, KUNA quoted the minister as saying, “Receiving such [a] letter from Camp Arifjan was unexpected and we are communicating with U.S. Department of Defense for more details and information.”

But, Kuwait’s government in reaction said that a Wednesday report of a U.S. troop withdrawal is incorrect and that the state news agency was hacked.
