Bolivian Ex-President Anez Sentenced To 10 Years In Prison

Former president of Bolivia, Jeanine Anez was yesterday sentenced to 10 years in prison, more than a year after her arrest for an alleged plot — dismissed as fictional by many — to remove her rival and predecessor Evo Morales.

Anez, who has been held in pre-trial detention since March 2021, has consistently denounced what she calls political persecution.

The former interim leader will serve 10 years in a women’s prison in La Paz, the administrative capital’s First Sentencing Court announced in a decision that comes three months after her trial began.

EFCC vs Nyako: What Court Decided On Ex-Governor’s Trial

The Federal High Court, Abuja, on Thursday, dismissed a plea by a defendant in a suit filed by EFCC against Murtala Nyako, former Adamawa Governor, and others to stop the prosecution from closing its case.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the defendant, Zulkifik Abba, who is the 3rd defendant, had, on Nov. 13, prayed the court to order the anti-graft agency to call three witnesses listed among the prosecution’s prospective witnesses shortly after the commission signified intention to close its case.

The EFCC had called 21 witnesses in the ongoing trial and indicated its plan to close

Verdict In Al-Bashir’s Corruption Trial Expected Saturday

A verdict in the corruption trial of Sudan’s ousted president Omar al-Bashir is expected to be delivered on Saturday.

The court in the capital of Khartoum heard final testimonies in the case on Nov. 16, including that of the government’s auditor.

After being overthrown during a military coup on April 11, al-Bashir was found to be in possession of large sums of local and foreign currency, as well as other assets, without legal justification.

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema may be facing a criminal trial after France’s highest court of appeal on Monday dismissed his appeal challenging the legality of a blackmail investigation over a sextape featuring fellow footballer Mathieu Valbuena.

The court found that the investigative methods used in the case, in which Benzema is alleged to have colluded in blackmailing Valbuena, were within the law.

German cyclist Tony Martin is to skip the Olympics in Tokyo next year to focus on the world championships, the time-trial specialist told broadcaster MDR on Thursday.

A Polish healthcare assistant accused of killing six people under his care with insulin overdoses went on trial in Germany on Tuesday.

Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Wednesday, overruled the British national, James Nolan, on his application for adjournment over inability of his counsel to prepare for his defence.

Justice Abang, who overruled Nolan, ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Counsel, Ekele Iheanacho, to call his first witness.

Two Murder Suspects Awaiting Trial Escape From Jail

Two “dangerous” murder suspects escaped from a California jail on Sunday and remain on the loose, according to authorities.

Santos Fonseca, 21, and Jonathan Salazar, 20, were awaiting trial on unrelated murder charges when they bolted from the Monterey County Adult Detention Facility in Salinas.

“We need the public’s help to be on the lookout” for them, the sheriff’s office said in a statement on Sunday.

Fonseca is 5-foot-7 and 150 pounds, and Salazar is 5-foot-7 and 170 pounds, according to the sheriff’s office. Both have black hair and brown eyes, and have been in custody since 2018.
