There was mild pandemonium at the popular New Benin Market in Oredo Local Government Area of Benin, Edo State on Saturday, following a clash between Hausa and Igbo traders.

Africa Daily News, New York gathered that although the situation has been brought under control, it was only made possible by the quick intervention of combined security personnel to quell the crisis.

Trouble was believed to have been ignited after one of the Hausa traders allegedly attacked the Igbo trader with a machete over a little disagreement thereby inflicting serious injury on his forehead.

Eco: Nigerian Traders Send Message To Buhari Govt, ECOWAS

The National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTS), has advised the Federal Government and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to address corruption and regional cross border trade challenges before adopting ECO Currency.

Mr. Ken Ukaoha, NANTS President, gave the advice on Saturday, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

According to him, the general problem facing the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS) must also be addressed.

Ukaoha said that ECOWAS and Nigeria must seek to address the myriad of challenges facing regional cross border trade such as intimidation, harassment of traders, bribery and corruption.

Mysterious fire has razed goods worth millions of naira at yam, hotel, carpentry, and foam sections of Bridgehead market, Onitsha, Anambra State.

Traders Count Losses Over Oyingbo Market Closure

Traders at the popular Oyingbo Market in Lagos have been counting their losses following its closure by Lagos State government over environmental infractions.

Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) on Thursday shut the market over indiscriminate refuse dumping and refusal to patronise Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators.

Other infractions included roadside trading and poor hygienic practices resulting in serious environmental problems in the area.

The traders, however, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday that the sudden closure without notice was adversely affecting their businesses.

A wildfire yesterday gutted a section of the popular Balogun Market on Lagos Island.

An eyewitness disclosed to The Guardian that a section of the market was engulfed in flames. According to a source, the building on fire is a shopping plaza located at No. 43, Martins Street, Lagos Island.

Firemen from the Lagos State Fire Service have arrived at the scene alongside other security officers to put out the fire.
Traders in the busy market have lamented the inability of the firefighters to put out the raging inferno.

2,000 Traders Affected By Onitsha Fire, Says NEMA Official

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says that at least 2,000 traders suffered huge losses in the fuel tanker fire that destroyed major parts of the Ochanja Market in Onitsha.

The South-East Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Mr Fred Anusim, disclosed in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu while speaking on the extent of damage by the fire.
