Niger Delta: EFCC, DSS Move Against Oil Theft

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and the Department of State Services (DSS), Thursday, pledged to fight against Niger Delta oil thieves and other maritime related economic crimes.

The anti-oil theft resolution was disclosed by the new EFCC PortHarcourt Zonal Head Office, Usman Imam, when he went on a familiarization visit to the Rivers State headquarters of the DSS located in the metropolis.

EFCC acting spokesman, Tony Orilade said this in a statement in Abuja.

Delta State High Court, Asaba has sentenced a JAMB official, James Orji Ihejirika to eight years imprisonment for stealing the Board’s E-facility cards and change of course cards worth ₦12.5 million.

Ihejirka was an accountant working at the Asaba JAMB office. He received consignments  containing  E-facility cards and change of course cards worth N12.5 million from JAMB headquarters but instead of handing over to his state coordinator, he sold them and converted the money to his personal use.

NEITI: Why Oil Theft In Nigeria May Not End Soon

The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) has given possible reasons why widespread theft of Nigeria’s crude oil and refined petroleum products may not end soon.

NEITI, which recently disclosed that approximately 488.6 million barrels of crude oil and 4.2 billion litres of refined petroleum products worth $40.06 billion and $1.84 billion respectively were lost by the country between 2009 and 2018, explained that a number of existing reasons and challenges suggest the practice could go on for a while.

The House of Reps have resolved to set up an ad-hoc committee to ascertain the quantity of oil stolen on a daily basis and the people responsible for the theft within the country. 

The Reps decision followed the adoption of a motion on oil theft in Nigeria moved by Hon. Chukwuma Umeoji who represents Aguata federal constituency, Anambra State.

Hon. Umeoji had stressed that Nigeria loses about ₦5 trillion yearly from oil theft, an amount which the government desperately needs to finance the budget.

Oil theft: Shell records loss of 11,000bpd

Oil theft from Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) joint venture (JV) pipeline network averaged 11,000 barrels per day (bpd) last year, its General Manager, External Relations Mr. Igo Weli, said on Thursday.

He said this is an increase of about 20 per cent over previous year. The number of sabotage-related spills increased during the same period to 111 compared to 62 in 2017 and, since 2012, SPDC has removed more than 1,160 illegal theft points.

The Navy said yesterday that it had arrested nine foreign nationals alongside two boats and seven trucks, for alleged stolen Petrol Motor Spirit (PMS), near Atlas Cove in Lagos.
