NMA Suspends Warning Strike

The Nasarawa State chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), has suspended the warning strike it embarked on over an attack on its female member.

Dr Bulus Peter, Chairman of NMA in the state, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Friday in Lafia.

Peter said the strike, which lasted for three days, followed the attack on the doctor, whose name was not provided, by a patient relative at the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital (DASH), Lafia.

The Chairman explained that the association decided to suspend the strike following intervention by the state government

Air France Suspends Flights Through Iran, Iraq Over US

Air France on Wednesday announced the suspension of flight through Iranian and Iraqi airspace until further notice.

This is coming after Iran fired ballistic missiles on bases housing US troops in Iraq.

“As a precautionary measure and following news of airstrikes underway, Air France has decided to suspend until further notice all flights through Iranian and Iraqi airspace,” an Air France spokesman said.

Belgium Suspends Extradition Case For Catalan MEPs

A Belgian judge on Thursday suspended consideration of a Spanish warrant seeking the return of two Catalan separatist leaders to face trial, their lawyer said.

Exiled former Catalan regional president Carles Puigdemont and his health minister Toni Comin were elected members of the European Parliament in May last year.

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled last month that they enjoy immunity from prosecution unless Spain requests this be removed and their fellow MEPs agree.

Senate Suspends Hearing On Social Media Bill Till Next Year

The Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters has suspended further legislative actions on the controversial anti-social media bill sponsored by Senator Musa Sani till January next year.

Investigations by our correspondent revealed that the decision was not unconnected with the mixed feelings expressed by members of the 14-member Senate panel during their maiden meeting on the issue. The members are all lawyers.

World Athletics announced on Friday it had suspended the reinstatement process of Russian athletics and was contemplating expelling the country entirely from the sport.

The news comes a day after the president of the Russian athletics federation (RUSAF) and other senior officials were suspended for “serious breaches” of anti-doping rules, putting the nation’s track and field athletes’ participation at next year’s Tokyo Olympics in further danger.

Authorities of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) has ordered the indefinite suspension of six female students of the university for allegedly bullying another female student.

A statement issued by the Deputy Director, Corporate Communication of the university, Mr Adegbenro Adebanjo, indicated that the students were found wanting after investigations on the matter.

The National Union of Food Beverage and Tobacco Employees (NUFBTE) has suspended picketing and other industrial action planned against Deli Food for the company’s alleged anti labour activities.

Recall that the union had shut down the operation of the company recently alleging that the company was proposing to sack over 300 workers without compensation.

Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha has ordered the immediate suspension of daily tolls, tickets and taxes from all commercial drivers in the state until further notice.
This followed complaints of incessant harassment and extortion of commercial vehicle operators by alleged agents of the Imo State government.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria has delisted 14,337 non-financial members who are owing the association dues for more than three years effective from November 1, 2019.

The professional accountancy body, in a statement signed by its registrar John I. Evbodaghe, said it has also suspended 11,240 members who are owing dues covering between than six months to three years.

The Nigerian government on Thursday ordered the immediate suspension of the proposed Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) charges on customers who use them.

Court Suspends Ongoing NNPC Job Recruitment

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the suspension of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation’s (NNPC) ongoing job recruitment pending determination of a suit filed by one Pelumi Olajengbesi.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Olajengbesi, a public interest lawyer, had commenced the enforcement of the fundamental rights of all potential applicants to set aside the recruitment by the NNPC on the ground that it was discriminatory. The recruitment had disqualified Nigerians above the age of 28 from applying for the vacant positions.

But Olajengbesi had faulted the age criterion, noting that it violated Section 3(e)(iv)
