Sudan Declares Economic Emergency As Currency Plunges

Sudan has declared a state of emergency to avert economic downturn due to the dramatic fall of its local currency against the US dollar and soaring inflation.

The decision — reported by official news agency SUNA — includes setting up emergency courts, enacting laws to protect the economy, and imposing harsher penalties on smugglers and a rising black market.

In a Thursday press conference, Finance Minister Heba Ali blamed the sharp dollar rise on “systematic sabotage” by currency exchange market manipulators, official news agency SUNA reported.

Sudan To Form New Parliament After Peace Deal With Rebels

Sudan’s protest movement Thursday agreed to form the country’s new parliament only after a peace deal is reached with rebel groups for ending long-running conflicts in three border regions.

The 300-member parliament was to be formed within three months of a power-sharing deal that was signed on August 17 between protest leaders and the generals who had seized power after the April overthrow of longtime president Omar al-Bashir.

Since the signing of the so called “Constitutional Declaration”, the transitional government, led by Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, has engaged in talks with three rebel groups to reach a peace deal to …

He met victims of the war in the town of Al-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur state, which houses several sprawling camps where tens of thousands of displaced have been living for years.

South Sudan’s exiled rebel leader Riek Machar arrived in Juba on Saturday in a bid to salvage a peace deal with less than a month to go until he is to form a government with President Salva Kiir.

The foes, whose falling out in 2013 triggered a bloody civil war that has left almost 400,000 people dead and sparked a major humanitarian crisis, signed a peace deal in September last year that is meant to see them reunite once again in government.

The deadline for the formation of this government, in which Machar will serve as first vice president, has …

Sudan restores Internet for only one person

A lawyer in Sudan has told the BBC that the Internet has been restored after a three-week shutdown – but only for him.

Abdel-Adheem Hassan yesterday won a lawsuit against telecoms operator Zain Sudan over the blackout ordered by Sudan’s military rulers.

However, he says his victory is only benefitting him so far as he filed the case in a personal capacity.

The Internet was cut off after security forces violently dispersed protesters camping in central Khartoum.

The protesters want an end to military rule following the coup against long-time leader Omar al-Bashir in April.

Mr Hassan said he is …
