Social Media Bill, Attempt To Muzzle Free Speech, Says CDD

The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) has described the debate on the ‘Protection from Internet Falsehood and Manipulation Bill 2019 (SB 132),’ known as the Social Media Bill as an attempt to muzzle free speech.

According to a statement signed by the Director, CDD, Idayat Hassan, the legislation which has passed a second reading in the Senate, is an attempt to use the legislative process to muzzle freedom of expression.

Ahmed Lawan Says Hate Speech Bill Won’t Be Passed

Following the public outcry that greeted the hate speech bill, the Senate President Ahmed Lawan has said the Senate won’t pass the proposed anti-free speech bills.

Lawan made the disclosure in response to a detailed written protest letter against the hate speech bill and anti-social media bill before the senate by the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA.

Lagos Fiery Lawyer, Mr Femi Falana(SAN), has declared that the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government was allegedly misled into having the erroneous impression that only border closure can guarantee food security and economic development in the country.

Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi is the sponsor of the controversial bill on Hate Speech, which prescribes a death penalty for promoters of incitement and other violent crimes. 

Although he has jettisoned the death penalty clause, more stakeholders are still calling for a total discontinuation of the consideration of the bill.

The  Christain Association of Nigeria (CAN) has raised the alarm over the controversial Hate Speech Bill, which it claimed is a ploy by the Buhari-led administration to gag Nigerians.
