Spain Electoral Board Disqualifies Catalan President

Spain’s electoral board ordered Friday that Catalan separatist president Quim Torra be disqualified from being a member of Catalonia’s regional parliament, meaning he would lose his presidential post.

The electoral board decision comes after Catalonia’s High Court of Justice last month convicted Torra of disobedience for failing to remove separatist symbols from public buildings during an election campaign and banned him from holding public office for 18 months.

Catalonia’s autonomy statute specifies that the head of the region’s government must be a lawmaker in the regional assembly.

The election board ruling comes as Spain’s acting Prime Minister, Socialist Pedro Sanchez, …

Monaco Replace Fired Jardim With Ex-Spain Boss Moreno

Leonardo Jardim has been fired by Monaco just over a year since he was previously sent packing and replaced by former Spain coach Roberto Moreno, the club announced on Saturday

To general surprise the 45-year-old was reappointed in January, just three months after he was sacked and replaced by Thierry Henry, who oversaw a disastrous tenure.

Moreno, 42, guided his country to Euro 2020 on a temporary basis as Luiz Enrique took time away from the position to take care of his daughter, Xana, who died in August of cancer.

Moreno Claims To Be In The Dark Over Enrique Spain Snub

Former Spain coach Robert Moreno responded to accusations of disloyalty on Thursday by claiming he still does not know why Luis Enrique chose to exclude him from his backroom team.

Luis Enrique’s return to the national side was announced last week and he said Moreno had been “disloyal” and that he does “not want someone like that in my staff” in his presentation press conference on Wednesday.

Moreno was previously Luis Enrique’s assistant but was promoted to head coach in June after Luis Enrique resigned to take care of his nine-year-old daughter Xana, who died in August of cancer.

Nothing Left To Give, Says Nadal After Spain Win Davis Cup

Rafael Nadal admitted he gave everything he had left to lead Spain to their sixth Davis Cup success on Sunday after they beat Canada in the final in Madrid.

Nadal’s 6-3, 7-6 (9/7) victory over Shapovalov confirmed another triumph for Spain after Roberto Bautista Agut had earlier seen off Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-6 (7/3), 6-3.

All five of Spain’s squad played a part over the course of the week but Nadal’s colossal effort in front of the home fans at the Caja Magica proved the difference.

The 33-year-old won eight out of eight rubbers, including two in the singles and doubles …

Nadal Hails ‘Amazing Atmosphere’ As Spain Beat Russia

Rafael Nadal instigated a Spanish comeback against Russia in the Davis Cup on Tuesday by capitalising on a raucous home crowd to beat Karen Khachanov in straight sets.

Nadal, who will finish the year as world number one, came through a second-set tie-break to defeat Khachanov 6-3, 7-6 (9/7) and level the Group B match in Madrid.

Marcel Granollers and Feliciano Lopez then won the deciding doubles rubber 6-4, 7-6 (7/5) against Khachanov and Andrey Rublev, who had earlier given Russia the lead with a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7/0) win over Roberto Bautista Agut.

A new format this year means …

Luis Enrique Returns As Spain Coach After Daughter’s Death

Luis Enrique will return as coach of Spain and replace Robert Moreno ahead of Euro 2020, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed on Tuesday.

Moreno took charge in June after Luis Enrique had resigned to take care of his daughter Xana, who died in August of bone cancer.

“Today we can confirm Luis Enrique returns to his position of work,” RFEF president Luis Rubiales said in a press conference at the national team’s training base in Las Rozas.

Rubiales said Luis Enrique has a contract until the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and that it will be up to him …

Spain Votes In Repeat General Election Amid Tensions

Spain voted Sunday in its fourth general election in as many years amid heightened tensions over the separatist push in Catalonia that has fuelled a surge in support for upstart far-right party Vox.

The repeat polls were called after Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez failed to secure support from other parties following an inconclusive election in April which saw his Socialist party win the most votes, but no working majority in parliament.

However, opinion polls suggest this new election will fail to break the deadlock. Neither the left nor the right look likely to win a ruling majority in Spain’s 350-seat

Climate Change: Spain Offers To Host COP25 In Madrid

Just a day after the President of Chile said his country could no longer hold the world’s annual climate conference, Spain has offered to host it in Madrid.

The critical meeting, called COP25, was due to take place in Santiago for two weeks from 3 December.

Chilean President Sebastián Piñera said his government needed “to prioritise re-establishing public order” after serious anti-government protests.

Spain’s offer will be considered by the UN’s climate body next week.

The Spanish government said it considered multilateral action on climate change to be a priority for the UN.

The annual Conference of the Parties (COP) …

Spain: Female Footballers To Strike Over Pay And Conditions

Almost 200 female footballers in Spain from various first division clubs have voted to go on strike over pay and working conditions.

The vote late Tuesday won the support of 93 percent of 188 players from 16 clubs after more than a year of failed negotiations with the Association of Women’s Football Clubs (ACFF).

Clubs are proposing part-time salaries worth 8,000 euros a year while the players are demanding a minimum of 12,000, amounting to 75 percent of minimum full-time contracts.

“We are footballers 24 hours a day, 100 percent of the time,” said Ainhoa Tirapu, the goalkeeper for Athletic …

Protesters Take To Streets As Spain Jails Catalan Leaders

Protesters Take To Streets As Spain Jails Catalan Leaders

Within minutes of the ruling, protesters had poured onto the streets of the Catalan capital, waving flags and blocking traffic over the conviction of the separatist leaders who organised a 2017 referendum banned by Madrid.

“I feel fury and a sense of powerlessness,” said Joan Guich, a 19-year-old student protesting in Barcelona after Spain’s Supreme Court jailed nine Catalan leaders jailed over a failed independence bid.

“They have been convicted for an ideology which I agree with.”

“We have to mobilise and stick up for them … in a way that has an impact, closing airports, stations, but always avoiding …

Three other defendants were found guilty of disobedience and will not serve prison sentences.

The 12 politicians and activists had all denied the charges.

Separatists in Catalonia were planning mass civil disobedience ahead of the verdict.

Last Minute Penalty By King Denies Spain In Norway Draw

Last Minute Penalty By King Denies Spain In Norway Draw

The 94th-minute penalty by Joshua King snatched Norway a 1-1 draw with Spain in Oslo on Saturday as the three-time champions were made to wait to qualify for Euro 2020.

Victory would have booked Robert Moreno’s Spain a spot at next year’s finals, to be played at 12 venues across Europe, if Romania had failed to beat the Faroe Islands or Malta had beaten Sweden.

But Romania saw off the Faroes 3-0 and Sweden thrashed Malta 4-0, while King’s dramatic equaliser mean Spain will need to beat the Swedes in Solna on Tuesday to be sure of qualification with two …
