The devastating floods in South Sudan have blocked aid from reaching displaced people, the UN disclosed on Saturday, warning that a camp is presently housing 75,000 Sudanese refugees who would receive no food this month.

The world’s newest nation is presently feeling the brunt of four consecutive years of flooding, with about two-thirds of the country and no fewer than 900,000 people now directly impacted by the floodwaters, according to the United Nations.

A further crisis could be looming after South Sudan’s leaders on Thursday announced that the country’s post-war transitional government would remain in power two years beyond an agreed deadline, in a move foreign partners warned lacked legitimacy.

Nigeria Ready To Help South Sudan, Fight Insurgency – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday pledged his administration’s readiness to lend a helping hand to South Sudan in fighting insurgency and restoring cohesion to the country following recent disturbances.

The President made the pledge while receiving in the audience at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Hon. Albino Mathom Ayuel, Special Envoy of President Salva Kiir Mayardit of South Sudan.

Speaking to the Special Envoy, he recounted the situation the administration met on the ground in the North East in 2015, and how great strides have been taken in comparison with the present days.

South Sudan: Assembly Changes Law To Establish 10 States

 

South Sudan’s transitional legislative assembly has passed key amendments to the Constitution, allowing the country to return to 10 states.

The assembly, which is supposed to act as Parliament for the next 30 months, made changes to the supreme law.

This also allows the administration of the three additional areas carved out of the states to be run by appointed officers, but in a hierarchical format where local state governors will have a say.

South Sudan’s warring parties have reached a tentative agreement to revert to ten states, paving the way for the creation of a transitional government of national unity.

In an overnight about-turn, President Salva Kiir stood down from his stance on 32 states, saying he was compromising for the sake of the country’s peace.
