Panic As 17 Mysteriously Die In South African Nightclub

No fewer than 17 young people were on Sunday discovered dead at a nightclub in a township in South Africa’s southern city of East London, the police in the area have confirmed. 

A provincial police spokesman whose name was given as brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana narrated the tragic event to reporters saying; ‘We got a report about 17 (people) that died in a local tavern in Scenery Park which is based in East London’.

‘We are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident,’ he added.

He went on to state that the victims were aged between 18 and 20 years.

The Nigeria Union South Africa (NUSA), yesterday announced the death of another Nigerian, whose name was given as Nicholas John in South Africa, following a vicious attack on foreigners by gangsters in the former apartheid enclave.

The President of NUSA, Mr .Collins Mgbo, announced the killing of John in a statement which was sighted by Africa Daily News, New York on Thursday.

John, an indigene of Ogun State was reportedly killed after he was attacked by a mob at his shop in Kimberly in South Africa’s Northern Cape on Feb. 12.

Omicron: Severe Cases Remain Low In South Africa – WHO

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Thursday disclosed that the Covid-19 Omicron variant is spreading to more countries in Africa, while weekly COVID-19 cases in the continent surged by 93 percent.

The world health body pointed out that there are signs of hope as preliminary data indicates that hospitalisations across South Africa remain low.

About 10 different African countries, including South Africa, currently account for 46 per cent of the nearly 1,000 Omicron cases reported by 57 countries across the world.

WHO said emerging data from South Africa indicates that Omicron may cause less severe illness.

South African embattled power utility Eskom has announced severe nationwide power cuts, blaming rising electricity demand as winter sets in alongside breakdowns at two power plants as the reasons behind the moves.

South Africa Opens Borders To African Countries, Limits Others

South Africa will reopen its borders to all African countries from Thursday while barring tourists from around 50 nations with high coronavirus infection rates, the government said on Wednesday.

The continent’s most industrialised economy shuttered its borders at the start of a strict nationwide lockdown on March 27 to limit the spread of the virus.
