A mine dam on Sunday burst and sparked flooding that has now swept away houses and cars in central South Africa, officials have confirmed forcing residents to be evacuated from the areas. 

Television footage which was obtained by Africa Daily News, New York clearly showed a river of mud and water flowing away from the mine after the burst and into a nearby residential area, which went on to cover roads and sweep houses away, in Jagersfontein, a town about 100 kilometres (62 miles) southwest of the Free State province capital, Bloemfontein.

Stop Comparing Nigeria To South Africa — Finance Minister

Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, has warned Nigerians to stop comparing Nigeria with South Africa.

She pointed out that South Africa is a tax-based economy, while Nigeria on the other hand is competing with Sudan in the area of taxation.

The minister disclosed this on Monday while defending the government’s Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper.

According to the minister, most high earners in Nigeria are not paying taxes, particularly at the state level.

South Africa Unemployment Rate Crashes Despite Floods, Outages

The unemployment rate in South Africa fell for a second consecutive quarter based notwithstanding the widespread power cuts and devastating floods, StatsSA confirmed on Wednesday.

Africa Today News, New York reports that between April and June, the jobless rate declined by 0.6 of a percentage point over the first quarter to 33.9 percent of the workforce, the official data agency disclosed.

In the first quarter, unemployment fell to 34.5 after 35.3 percent at the end of 2021.

Some yet-to-be-identified gunmen on Sunday opened fire on a group of men playing dice on a street corner in a Johannesburg suburb, killing at least four of them and injuring two others, police confirmed on Monday.

Panic As 17 Mysteriously Die In South African Nightclub

No fewer than 17 young people were on Sunday discovered dead at a nightclub in a township in South Africa’s southern city of East London, the police in the area have confirmed. 

A provincial police spokesman whose name was given as brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana narrated the tragic event to reporters saying; ‘We got a report about 17 (people) that died in a local tavern in Scenery Park which is based in East London’.

‘We are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident,’ he added.

He went on to state that the victims were aged between 18 and 20 years.
