Singapore Sanctions Israeli Settlers Over West Bank Violence

Singapore announced on Friday that it will freeze financial dealings with four Israeli settlers and block their entry into the country, saying the men carried out severe acts of violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

The foreign affairs ministry said the actions of Meir Mordechai Ettinger, Elisha Yered, Ben-Zion Gopstein and Baruch Marzel were unlawful and harmed efforts to achieve a two-state solution. All four have previously been sanctioned by the European Union.

Singapore has denied entry to exiled Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Nathan Law, despite granting him a visa, saying his presence “would not be in national interests.”

Law, who lives in the UK, said he arrived in Singapore on Saturday to attend a closed-door, invitation-only conference but was detained at the border for four hours before being turned away. “I was not asked questions and they did not give reason for the denial,” he said.

Singapore on Tuesday announced the first local transmissions of the deadly coronavirus from China as a major aviation conference was scrapped due to the escalating health scare.

The Ministry of Health said it had found six additional cases, four of them involving human-to-human transmission in Singapore, bringing the total infections to 24 in the city-state.

“Though four of these cases constitute a local transmission cluster, there is as yet no evidence of widespread sustained community transmission in Singapore,” the ministry said in a statement.

Facebook published a correction on a user’s post-Saturday following demand from Singapore, the first time a tech giant has complied with the city-state’s law against misinformation.

Authorities had ordered the social media giant to correct a post promoting an article on a fringe news site containing “scurrilous accusations” of election rigging, ramping up their use of a controversial law against misinformation.
