Trafficking: FG Moves To Help Ekweremadu, Engages Lawyers

Nigeria’s Senate President, Ahmad Lawan during the plenary session yesterday revealed that Nigerian High Commission in the United Kingdom has engaged the services of lawyers to defend the senator representing Enugu West Senatorial District, Ike Ekweremadu, and his wife, Beatrice who are currently being prosecuted in London.

Lawan made this known yesterday while giving details about the outcome of a closed session which was held by the upper chamber before the start of plenary proceedings.

Electoral Act: Senate Rejects Buhari’s New Amendment Bill

The Senate on Wednesday vehemently turned down President Muhammdu Buhari’s Bill seeking to amend the Electoral Act, 2022 which he recently signed into law.

Africa Daily News, New York reports that the Bill which was titled: ‘A Bill for an Act to amend the Electoral Act 2022 and for related matters, 2022,’ was overwhelmingly rejected by Senators, a development that effectively stopped its second reading.

Senate Moves To Amend Electoral Act, Despite Court Ruling

The Nigerian Senate has begun moves to amend the 2022 Electoral Act, ignoring a Federal High Court order which actually restrained the National Assembly from tampering with the newly amended Act which was signed into law by the President two weeks ago.

Africa Daily News, New York gathered that Senate President Ahmad Lawan during plenary on Tuesday disclosed that the constitution stipulates separation of powers and the judiciary cannot stop another arm of government in performing its roles in a democracy.

Reconsider Position On ₦385 Pump Price, Senator Warns Govs

The Chairman Senate Committee on the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, Senator Gershom Bassey, has  state governors against pushing for an increment in the pump price of the Premium Motor Spirit, better known as petrol.

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum had during its virtual meeting  on  May 20, considered the report of a committee headed by the Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, and accepted its recommendation that supported a full deregulation of the petroleum industry.

The El-Rufai panel was said to have suggested that the pump price of the product should hover around N385 per litre.

Senate Approves Buhari’s $2.6bn Foreign Loan Request

The Senate, on Wednesday, approved the sum of $2.6 billion out of the $5.5 billion external borrowing request sent to the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari in May last year.

The approval came after the Upper Chamber considered a report by the Committee on Local and Foreign Debts during plenary.

The approved sum, according to the Chairman of the Local and Foreign Debt Committee, Clifford Ordia, would see €995 million euros going to finance priority projects of the federal government, while $1.5 billion (USD) would be disbursed to the thirty-six state governments to finance critical projects.

Senate Approves Fresh $1.5B, €995M loans For Buhari

The red chamber of Nigeria’s national assembly yesterday approved fresh external loans of $1.5bn and €995million for the Federal Government.

The Senate gave its approval for the foreign loans after considering the report of its committee on local and foreign debts during Wednesday’s plenary session.
