Suspected Jihadists Kidnap Six Teachers In Mali – Security

Six school teachers were kidnapped Friday by suspected jihadists in central Mali because they spoke French in the classroom, local and security forces said.

More than 900 schools have closed in the country, one of the poorest in the world, with more than two-thirds of them in central regions that since 2012 have witnessed insurrections by separatists, Salafists and jihadists, interlaced with inter-ethnic violence.

“Terrorists kidnapped six teachers from a school in Korientze because they were teaching in French,” a security source told AFP.

Malian officials use the word “terrorist” to describe jihadists.

Two senior US senators called for the government to study national security risks possibly posed by Chinese-owned video app TikTok, saying it could leave American users vulnerable to Beijing’s spying.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and Republican Senator Tom Cotton asked the Directorate of National Intelligence to “conduct an assessment of the national security risks” posed by TikTok.

“With over 110 million downloads in the US alone, TikTok is a potential counterintelligence threat we cannot ignore,” they said.

Schumer and Cotton suggested that TikTok’s owner ByteDance could be forced to share user information with Chinese intelligence.

The Hausa community in Ibusa, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, have requested for identity cards as a step towards curbing security challenges in the area.

Enugu Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, yesterday, donated 29 patrol vans to 10 security agencies in response to the recent rise of crime and insecurity in parts of the state.

Governor Ugwuanyi, while presenting the Innoson patrol vehicles, said the gesture was part of ongoing efforts to rejig the security architecture of the state.
