FG, US Sign Agreement For Repatriation Of $23m Abacha Loot

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that it has signed an agreement with the United States for the repatriation of the sum of $23 million, in assets allegedly looted by past leaders of Nigeria, including late General Sani Abacha.

Africa Daily Newsthat the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), signed the agreement on behalf of the Federal Government, while the US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard, signed for the  United States government.

Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA) on Thursday revealed that it has recovered more than $23 million stolen from Nigeria by the country’s late military dictator Sani Abacha, becoming the latest in a series of similar recoveries around the world.

Abacha ruled Africa’s most populous nation and top oil exporter from 1993 until his death in 1998, a period during which he stole up to $5 billion of public money, according to Transparency International. He was never charged.

The Supreme Court, yesterday, declined a request by family members of the late Head of state, General Sani Abacha to unfreeze accounts belonging to him and other members of the family in foreign countries.

The accounts, which are in banks in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Jersey, Liechenstein and Luxembourg, were frozen following mutual judicial assistance agreements entered with the countries by the Nigerian government during the administration of the then President, Olusegun Obasanjo, in 1999.
