Rwanda Minister, Biruta Issues Retaliation Warnings To Congo

As a result of the rising spate of attacks between Rwanda and Congo, the Rwandan Foreign Ministry has reiterated its earlier warnings that the nation would fight back if it suffers further attacks from the neighbouring country, the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Foreign Minister, Vincent Biruta, told reporters on Wednesday after accusing Congo of firing shells across the border in May this year.

“If attacks continue, we will not sit idly by, Rwanda will have the right to respond to protect the security of the country, to protect the security of its citizens, and we’ve the means to do that,”

The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank(AfDB) has approved two loans amounting to $180 million to co-finance a major energy project that will extend electricity access to rural areas and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Rwanda.

This follows the 26 May 2021 approval for $84.2 million from the resources of the African Development Fund (ADF), the concessional window of the Bank Group, for the same project.

Prosecutors in Rwanda have sought a life sentence for ‘Hotel Rwanda’ hero and government critic Paul Rusesabagina, who is charged with terrorism in a trial which many of his supporters have described as a political witch hunt.

 

During a seven-hour hearing yesterday, prosecutor Jean Pierre Habarurema said; ‘We have showed that every act by Rusesabagina was criminal in nature with the intent to commit terrorism’.

Rwanda has approved the production of medical cannabis strictly for export, seeking to target fast-growing markets in the United States and European Union, even though its use remains illegal at home.

Guidelines for the production and export of medical cannabis were approved by the cabinet on Monday, and a government statement said Wednesday that it would not change strict local laws around marijuana consumption.

Rwanda said on Monday it would re-open its busiest border post with Uganda to cargo trucks for 12 days, more than three months after it was closed amid tensions between the two neighbors triggered by security and economic disagreements.

In a statement, Rwanda’s revenue body said it was “pleased to inform the general public that heavy trucks are allowed to provisionally cross Gatuna border,” for 12 days starting Monday.
