Risking Doping Ban, Russia Pledges ‘Cooperation’

The Kremlin on Wednesday said it regrets a proposed four-year ban for the country’s athletes over doping but Russia is still open to cooperation to resolve the scandal.

“This is definitely concerning information. We regret this,” President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists.

Anti-doping watchdog WADA’s compliance review committee on Monday recommended a four-year sporting ban over falsified lab data it received from Russia.

If WADA chiefs adopt the review committee’s recommendations, Russia faces exclusion from key sporting events including the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

In the Kremlin’s first reaction, Peskov stressed that Moscow was still open to cooperation with …

The prospect of Russia being banned from next year’s Tokyo Olympics moved a step closer as the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) recommended the country’s drug-testing authority be declared non-compliant, with charges racking up against Russia and the clock ticking ahead of next July’s Games.

WADA said in Canada overnight Friday its Compliance Review Committee (CRC) recommended the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) be suspended again when the global watchdog meets in Paris on December 9.

If WADA chiefs adopt the recommendation, Russia faces severe sanctions including a possible ban from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The report by parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC) has been cleared by the security services but it has not yet been given approval for publication by Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Downing Street office, meaning it will not be released before a Dec. 12 election.

Britain has accused Russia of meddling and trying to interfere in Western elections.

Moscow has repeatedly denied any meddling and says the …

The Russia-Africa Accords, Good Tidings For Africa

The renewed interest of major powers to enter into cooperation accords with African countries is a good omen. A few months ago, the Japanese played host to a Japan-Africa summit.  So did the Chinese.  A few years ago, the United States did the same, likewise India.  Occasionally, we hear expressions characterizing Africa as the last frontier, a description capable of various interpretations.  It could mean the realization of a growing market of 1.2 billion people that needs to be explored and exploited.  It may mean the acceptance of the continent as an emerging territory in need of all kinds of

Pig Deaths On Russia Border: African Swine Fever Spreads?

More than a year after African swine fever began ravaging hogs in China, the virus may be escaping along the same route it’s believed to have entered — via Russia.

While the swine contagion has been present in Russia for 12 years, it’s only been spreading actively in the country’s Far East for the past few months. Authorities have reported almost 60 outbreaks in wild and domestic pigs, most within a few miles of the border with China.

Bolton has been asked to testify on 7 November but it is unclear how he will respond to the invitation. His former deputy Charles Kupperman has asked a court to decide whether he should respond to a congressional subpoena to testify or obey a White House order not to appear.

The acting ambassador to Ukraine, Bill Taylor, has testified that Morrison had told him about a conversation between Gordon Sondland, the US envoy to the European Union, and a Zelenskiy aide, Andriy Yermak, in which Sondland said Ukraine would not receive security assistance until an investigation of Burisma was launched. …

US-Russia Surveillance Flights Treaty Under Threat

Last February, a four-engined US OC-135B aircraft – a variant of the old Stratolifter military transport plane – lumbered into the air to conduct a surveillance flight over Russia.

Among those on board were six Russian officials to ensure fair-play. It was all part of a little-known agreement – the Open Skies Treaty – that since entering into force in 2002 has enabled unarmed reconnaissance flights over Russia, the United States and several other countries to improve confidence and assure against surprise attack.

Tuesday saw a long-awaited pullback between the two sides in a key area of the war-torn east.

The move was a precondition for the first face-to-face talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky.

“We welcome all efforts to reduce tensions,” Stoltenberg said during a visit to the Ukrainian port city of Odessa.
