Israel Demands Apology After Russia’s Hitler Comments

Israel on Monday requested an official apology from Russia describing the Russian foreign minister’s recent comments about Adolf Hitler and antisemitism an ‘outrageous statement and a terrible historic mistake.’

Africa Daily News, New York recalls that in an interview with an Italian television show on Sunday, Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov revealed that he believes Adolf Hitler had Jewish roots and suggested Jewish people may be the worst anti-Semites.

Lavrov’s comments came after he was asked how Russia can claim to be ‘denazifying’ Ukraine when the country’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, is Jewish.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Monday disclosed that Berlin was ready to support a gradual, EU-wide embargo on Russian oil imports which could come in place before the end of the year.

Russia’s defence ministry on Sunday claimed that it had struck at weapons which were supplied to Ukraine by the United States and European countries and also destroyed a runway at a military airfield near the Ukrainian city of Odessa.

The ministry narrated that it used high-precision Onyx missiles to strike the airfield, after Ukraine accused Russia of knocking out a newly-constructed runway at the main airport of Odessa last week.

The regional of Governor Odessa, Maksym Marchenko also claimed that Russia had used a Bastion missile, launched from Crimea.

The United Nations General Assembly suspended Russia from the United Nations Human Rights Council on Thursday in response to accusations of “gross and systematic violations and abuses of human rights” in Ukraine, prompting Moscow to announce its withdrawal from the council.

The US-led initiative received 93 votes in favor, 24 votes against, and 58 abstentions. Suspending Russia from the Geneva-based Human Rights Council required a two-thirds majority of voting members in the 193-member General Assembly in New York – abstentions do not count.
