Cross River Rerun: Security Rescue Abducted Corps Members

Six National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) members have been abducted and elections materials meant for Afafanyi and Igbonigoni House of Assembly re-run elections hijacked mid-sea along Etighidi River in Cross River State.

THISDAY  gathered that thugs suspected to be armed hijacked elections materials and abducted the INEC adhoc staff as they were about taking materials to Afafanyi and Igbonigoni wards for the rerun election on Saturday.

An eyewitness who declined giving his name alleged that the Corps members were accompanying the materials when suspected thugs allegedly abducted them and seized the materials.

Over 100 Stores, Shops, Destroyed In Cross River Motor Park

There was massive destruction of properties including stores, makeshift buildings and over 100 containers used by traders at Etim Edem Motor park in Calabar, Cross River State capital.

Abducted Cross River NLC Chairman Regains Freedom

The Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Cross River chapter, Mr Ben Ukpepi, has regained freedom from his abductors, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

Ukpepi, who was released on Sunday evening after being in captivity for six days, was kidnapped in his residence in Akpabuyo local government area of Cross River, near Calabar.

Police Comb Creeks For Abducted Cross River NLC Chairman

The police in Cross River State have begun a manhunt for the kidnappers of the state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ben Ukpepi, who was abducted from his residence on Tuesday.

The police said they were combing the creeks to rescue Ukpepi, who was whisked away from his CROSPIL Estate residence in the Akpabuyo Local Government Area of the state around 8pm.

The Ureje River, which runs along the Ado-Ijan Road in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, has earned for itself a scary reputation. The river has brought untold tragedy into the lives of many residents of the area and even strangers unfortunate to encounter its fury recently.

19 Killed As Bus Plunges Onto Frozen River In Siberia

A passenger bus plunged off a bridge onto a frozen river in Siberia on Sunday, killing 19 of the more than 40 people on board, authorities said.

A tyre on the bus burst as it was crossing the bridge over the Kuenga river in eastern Siberia’s Zabaikalsky region.

The vehicle, which was travelling from Sretensk to Chita and carried 40 passengers, skidded off the road and onto the ice.

“Nineteen people died and 21 received various injuries,” the office of the governor of the Zabaikalsky region said in a statement.

NIWA To Scale-Up Oguta River Port Project

National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has decried the level of abandonment of the Oguta river port in Osemoto, Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State.

Tragedy struck in Ekiti on Friday evening when residents of Ureje area of Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, learnt that  two secondary schools students died inside a  river during a swimming expedition.
