Earnings from oil and gas production in June were down by 44.65 per cent, indicating a value reduction of about $226.38 million between May and June 2019, data from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) have shown.

NNPC, in its June 2019 monthly financial and operations report, stated that in May, the sales value of oil and gas production in Nigeria was $547.61 million. This, however, dropped to $321.23 million in June.

Islamic State reports killing 20 Nigerian soldiers

Islamic State’s West African branch claimed responsibility for an attack on a Nigerian army base in northeastern Borno state and said its fighters had killed 20 soldiers.

The assault, which raised questions about government claims to have almost defeated the insurgents, took place in the town of Kareto on Wednesday.

Modern day slavery cases rise by 36% in Britain – Reports

Reports of suspected modern slavery in Britain rose by more than a third in 2018, according to government data released on Tuesday, but campaigners said even that was likely only “the tip of the iceberg”.

Police, charities and other first responders referred 6,993 potential modern slavery cases to the government’s National Referral Mechanism (NRM) last year, 36% more than in 2017, Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA) said in its annual report.

The NRM is a national scheme whereby victims are identified and can receive support ranging from healthcare and housing to legal aid.

Five cases of cholera have been confirmed in Mozambique following the cyclone that ravaged the country killing at least 468 people, a government health official said Wednesday.

Cyclone Idai smashed into Mozambique on March 15, unleashing hurricane-force winds and heavy rains that flooded much of the centre of the poor southern African country and then battered eastern Zimbabwe and Malawi.
