Children Among 15 Killed In Uganda Landslide

No fewer than 15 people, mainly women, and children have been confirmed dead in a landslide that occurred in a western Ugandan town yesterday after the area was battered by heavy rains, the Red Cross said.

The disaster which occurred in the town of Kasese on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo has left a yet-to-be-identified number of people missing and wiped out homes.

COVID-19: Red Cross Trains 20 Volunteers In Niger

The International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) and the National Headquarters of the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) has commenced training of 20 selected volunteers from Niger on Coronavirus (COVID-19) response.

Mr Zakari Bolaji, Health Coordinator, national headquarters, NRCS, disclosed this while inaugurating the two -day training in Minna.

“This training will expose our volunteers to COVID -19 Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) and Cash Voucher Assistance (CVA),” he said.

Coronavirus cases have skyrocketed 15-fold in Libya since June, the Red Cross said Thursday, warning this was further deepening the dire humanitarian crisis in the conflict-ravaged country.

The International Committee of the Red Cross said known COVID-19 cases in Libya had soared from 571 in June to more than 9,000 on Thursday.

“There is a continuous degradation of the humanitarian situation in Libya,” ICRC president Peter Maurer told reporters, pointing out that after nine years of violent conflict, many families have seen any reserves they once had fully depleted.

The Red Cross on Tuesday launched what it said was the first global network of social media influencers to battle misinformation about the new coronavirus and spread lifesaving content about the pandemic.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), says its role in Nigeria does not involve taking part in the negotiation process between the federal government, the military and Boko Haram/ISWAP.
