17 Civilians Killed By Rebel Group In DR Congo

Seventeen people died yesterday during a militia attack on a village in northeastern DR Congo, a local civil society head announced.

Gunmen from the feared CODECO militia stormed Mbidjo in Ituri province’s Djugu territory during the morning, said Jules Uwechi, chairman of the village’s civil society group.

‘They opened fire, set houses ablaze, and pillaged the property of villagers… I myself narrowly escaped,’ Uwechi said in the provincial capital Bunia.

‘When we went back we found 17 people had been killed — seven women, eight men, and two children.’

Nine Killed As Rebels Attack Eastern DR Congo

Fighters from the feared Armed Democratic Forces (ADF) group killed six civilians in an attack on the town of Beni in North Kivu province in DR Congo yesterday night, according to local civil-society leader Pepin Paluku Kavota.

He told reporters on Wednesday the militants targeted a district just a kilometre from army headquarters in the city of 400,000.

The dead included a 15-year-old boy and a 90-year-old woman, said Kavota, who urged security forces “to redouble their efforts”.

The same night, militants also killed at least three people in an attack on a village in the neighbouring Ituri province.

A number of hostages seized by ethnic Rakhine rebels in a raid on a ferry packed with scores of Myanmar security forces have been killed, the insurgents and army said late Sunday, blaming each other for the deaths.

On Saturday rebels from the Arakan Army (AA), who are fighting for greater autonomy for Rakhine Buddhists from the state, forced a ferry to the shore taking around 50 people hostage including 14 soldiers and 29 police officers.
