Concerned Nigerians Call On UK To Release Ekweremadu, Wife

A group of concerned Nigerians have appealed to the Government of the United Kingdom to release former deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, and his wife, Nwanneka on bail almost five months after they were arrested. 

 The group, in a letter submitted to the British High Commission, Abuja entitled ‘The Travail of Senator Ike Ekweremadu: Protest Against Continued Detention Without Trial,’ which was obtained by Africa Dialy News, New York described Ekweremadu as a law-abiding citizen, perfect gentleman, and philanthropist, who has used his resources to touch lives of the less privileged.

No fewer than thirteen inmates have been confirmed dead and two others injured following yet another bloody fight in a notorious Ecuadoran prison yesterday, law enforcement officials have revealed.

‘Unfortunately, central command reports 13 (inmates) dead and two injured,’ the South American country’s prison authority SNAI said on Twitter.

The founder of Sotitobire Miracle Centre, Prophet Babatunde Alfa has been remanded at Olokuta Correctional Centre.

Prophet Alfa who was dragged before an Akure Magistrate Court on Monday by the Department of State Security, DSS, was accused of allegedly being involved in the mysterious disappearance of a one-year-old boy, Gold Kolawole from his church.

Eight officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) have been suspended over their alleged role in the electrocution of five inmates of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Ikoyi, Lagos.

Lagos Orders Release Of 11 Children From Prison Custody

Lagos State commissioner for justice and attorney-general, Moyosore Onigbanjo, SAN, has ordered the release of 11 children held in prison custody in the state.
Onigbanjo in a statement by the ministry’s spokesman Kayode Oyekanmi said the children’s imprisonment was contrary to the provision of Section 207 of the Lagos State Child Rights Law of 2015.

Oyekanmi disclosed that Onigbanjo got aware of the children’s ordeal after a “tip-off received from concerned members of the public on certain Correctional Centres in the state having minors in their custody.”

Ecuador on Wednesday reaffirmed the six-year prison sentence given to former vice president Jorge Glas for receiving millions of dollars in kickbacks as part of a corruption scandal, the prosecutor’s office said.

Glas, who was convicted of receiving $13.5 million in bribes from Brazilian construction company Odebrecht, has been imprisoned in Latacunga, south of Quito, since 2017.
