Journalists Facing Attempts To Silence Them On Many Fronts –UN

The United Nations has called governments at all levels worldwide to respect the rights and protect journalists and media workers in their respective countries.

UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, made the call on Tuesday in his message to commemorate this year’s World Press Freedom Day tagged ‘journalism under digital siege’.

He pointed out the need to shine a spotlight on the essential work of journalists and other media workers who seek transparency and accountability from those in power, often at great personal risk.

Lekan Are, Ex-Chairman Of Press, Kakanfo Inn Is Dead

Lekan Are, a foremost Nigerian agronomist, businessman, philanthropist and Chairman of University Press Plc, is dead.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Are was 86-years-old.

Mr Toye Akinrinola, the Public Relations Officer of University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, confirmed Are’s death to NAN on Saturday.

He said that Are died after a brief illness at the High Dependency Unit of UCH at about 12.30am on Saturday.

Are, born on Dec. 2, 1933, was a former General Manager of Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority.

China Biggest Jailer Of Journalists – Press

At least 250 journalists are jailed around the world, with the largest number held in China, amid a growing crackdown by authoritarian regimes on independent media, a press watchdog group said Wednesday.

Many of those imprisoned face “anti-state” charges or are accused of producing “false news,” according to the report by the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists which also cited Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Eritrea, Vietnam, and Iran for their jailing of journalists.

No good governance without free press, says Saraki

President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, on Friday stated that there can be no good governance in any country where press Freedom is not guaranteed.

Saraki made the statement in a goodwill message to a one day conference marking the 2019 World Press Freedom Day organized by the Premium Times Centre for Investigative Journalism (PTCIJ) and the European Union’s Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) Programme.

The theme of the conference was: “Press Freedom in Nigeria — the Rule of Law, Media and Violent Extremism.”
