US And China Trade Barbs Over Coronavirus

US And China Trade Barbs Over Coronavirus

US President Donald Trump doubled down Tuesday on calling the coronavirus spreading rapidly across the world the “Chinese Virus,” despite protests from Beijing.

“It did come from China, so I think it’s very accurate,” Trump told a news conference, defending tweets in which he used the label for the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trump indicated that another motive was payback for what he said was China’s disinformation campaign blaming the US military for the virus.

“China was putting out information which was false,” he said.

“I didn’t appreciate the fact that China was saying that our military gave it to them. Our …

Syria’s Brutal War Enters 10th Year

Syria’s brutal conflict enters its 10th year Sunday with President Bashar al-Assad’s regime consolidating its hold over a war-wracked country with a decimated economy where foreign powers flex their muscle.

When Syrians took to the streets on March 15, 2011, they could scarcely have imagined their anti-government protests would turn into a complex war entangling rebels, jihadists and outside forces.

At least 384,000 people have since died, including more than 116,000 civilians, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said Saturday.

The conflict has displaced more than 11 million people internally and abroad.

“Nine years of revolution illustrate the …

US President Donald Trump will propose cutting billions of dollars in U.S. foreign aid in his fiscal 2021 budget while seeking an increase in funds to counter developing economic threats from China and Russia.

According to Reuters, Trump will seek to make a 21% cut in foreign aid …

Gambian President Barrow Rolls Back Press Freedom

Attacks on reporters and the shutting down of two radio stations in Gambia have reminded journalists of the dark days of Yahya Jammeh. Is President Adama Barrow reneging on his pledge to uphold press freedom?

When President Adama Barrow was formally sworn in on February 18, 2017, he told the cheering crowd at the Independence Stadium near the capital Banjul: “This is a victory for democracy.”

Barrow was referring to his victory over longtime ruler Yahya Jammeh whom Barrow had defeated in the December 2016 election. In his inaugural speech, Barrow promised to release political prisoners and improve press
