South Africa Unemployment Rate Crashes Despite Floods, Outages

The unemployment rate in South Africa fell for a second consecutive quarter based notwithstanding the widespread power cuts and devastating floods, StatsSA confirmed on Wednesday.

Africa Today News, New York reports that between April and June, the jobless rate declined by 0.6 of a percentage point over the first quarter to 33.9 percent of the workforce, the official data agency disclosed.

In the first quarter, unemployment fell to 34.5 after 35.3 percent at the end of 2021.

Buhari’s Govt Explains Recent Drop In Electricity Generation

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Abubakar Aliyu has confirmed the dip in electricity generation in most parts of the country while explaining what he believes were the reasons behind it.

The situation affects some states in Nigeria as generation dipped to below 1,940MW from 3,647MW recorded earlier in the week.

In a statement on Saturday, Aliyu explained that the cause was the partial shutdown of the Oben gas plant.

South Africa Intensifies Power Cuts As Winter Demand Climbs

South African embattled power utility Eskom has announced severe nationwide power cuts, blaming rising electricity demand as winter sets in alongside breakdowns at two power plants as the reasons behind the moves.

In a statement yesterday, the power company pointed out that the expanded electricity rationing would last from 2 pm until 10 pm from Wednesday through to Sunday.

It also disclosed that the escalated power cuts were to ‘ration the remaining emergency generation reserves, which have been depleted.’

El-Rufai Reveals Amount Govt Spent On Power Without Result

The Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has disclosed that the Federal Government has spent a whooping sum of ₦1.7trillion on power in the last three years without much progress.

El-Rufai made the disclosure while briefing journalists on the outcome of the National Economic Council, NEC, meeting presided over by the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Thursday.

He described the power situation in the country as a national emergency that requires all hands on deck to interrogate why the sector was not working to the benefit of Nigerians.

President Muhammadu Buhari has cancelled the dismissal of Marilyn Amobi as the Managing Director of the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company Limited (NBET).

Sydney Power Under Threat As Fires Destroy Substations

Electricity supplies in Australia’s most populous state, including its largest city Sydney, were under threat on Saturday after bushfires took out two substations with authorities warning of rolling blackouts if conditions worsen.

The blazes have raged across New South Wales, and they brought down transmission lines in the state’s south connecting with neighbouring Victoria, state energy minister Matt Kean tweeted.

Kean urged people to reduce unnecessary electricity use and “turn off pool pumps, lights in unoccupied rooms and avoid using washing machines and dishwashers”.

Power Sector: Nigerian Govt Inaugurates Task Force

The Minister of Power, Mr. Sale Mamman, on Thursday, inaugurated a Ministerial Task Force on Power which will serve as an advisory team on policies and innovative technology in the sector.

The 22 member Task Force has Prof. Abubakar Sambo as Chairman, Mr. Lateef Ogunleye as Vice Chairman and Chief Executive, while Mr. Haruna Ladan, Deputy Director, Appointment, Promotion and Discipline (APD) in the Ministry of Power will serve as its secretary, NAN reports.

California Power Firm To Pay $1.7bn Over Wildfires

A California energy supplier has reached a nearly $1.7 billion settlement with regulators for its role in causing devastating wildfires in 2017 and 2018 that killed more than 100 people in total.

Faulty Pacific Gas and Electric power lines were blamed for sparking last year’s so-called Camp Fire in northern California, the deadliest in the state’s modern history.

Under the draft deal published Tuesday, PG&E shareholders will foot the bill for wildfire-related costs, as well as forest fire-fighting measures and the upkeep of electrical equipment blamed for causing several fatal blazes.
