Some Rome Churches Reopen After Angry Pope Steps In

Some of Rome’s Catholic churches reopened Friday after Pope Francis voiced displeasure with the Italian authorities’ push to shut them because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The rare standoff between the 83-year-old pontiff and Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte’s government came as Italy’s death toll reached 1,266.

The Mediterranean country has suffered more than half the COVID-19 fatalities reported outside China and has seen the toll grow by hundreds each day.

Conte has responded by shuttering most shops and all restaurants and other public places in the hope of stemming contagion and easing the burden on overstretched hospitals.

Pope Creates New Diocese For Rejected Bishop Of Ahiara

Pope Francis has established the Diocese of Ekwulobia, Anambra State and named Bishop Peter Ebere Okpaleke, the rejected bishop of Ahiara Diocese, Mbaise, as its first Ordinary.

Announcing the appointment Thursday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral, Awka, Catholic bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor described it as ‘pleasant surprises.’

He explained that the new Diocese was formed from part of the territory of the Diocese of Awka and would be a suffragan See of the Metropolitan See of Onitsha.

The bishop disclosed that the newly created Diocese would cover Akpu, Ekwuluobia and Achina Regions.

Catholic Pontiff, Pope Francis, has tested negative for the novel Coronavirus days after rumours of his contact with a COVID-19 patient broke.

This is as reported by an Italian newspaper Il Messaggero on Tuesday.

Catholic Pontiff, Pope Francis has cancelled a Mass as he catches an unspecified illness after meeting with people with Coronavirus on Wednesday.

The clergy has remained in Rome due to the illness.

 

Mirror UK quoted the Vatican as saying that the 83-year-old pontiff, had a ‘slight indisposition’ and would proceed with the rest of his planned work later on Thursday.

It said the pontiff, however, “preferred to stay near Santa Marta”, the Vatican hotel where he uses as his residence.

Pope To Decide On Special Exception To Priestly Celibacy

Pope Francis is expected to decide on Wednesday whether to make a limited exception to the celibacy rule for priests, one of the most controversial issues in the Catholic Church today.

In October, a summit of bishops known as a synod proposed allowing married men into the priesthood, only in the Amazon area, to address the serious shortage of clergy in remote parts of the rainforest region.
