WHO Reports First Wild Polio Outbreak In Malawi

The landlocked East African country of Malawi on Friday became the first country in the continent to report the first wild polio outbreak in several years.

Africa Daily News, New York reports that the wild type 1 poliovirus was discovered in a child in the city of Lilongwe, the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced yesterday.

Laboratory tests had shown that it had apparently been brought in from Pakistan, it said.

Kano To Punish LGAs With Poor Polio Immunization

The Kano State Government has resolved to punish Local Government Areas in the state who perform poorly in polio immunisation exercises.

The State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje said his administration will also reward best performing LGAs and those who excel in the polio immunisation drive.

Ganduje who presided over the task force meeting on polio immunization held at Kano government house, noted that some of the local government areas do not have good representation at the review meetings.

Polio vaccination: Gates Foundation seeks urgent action

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) has called on the 36 governors to commence quick polio vaccination across their council areas, warning that if Nigeria experiences any case of wild polio virus outbreak, it would be a setback to government’s effort to be given a clean bill of health in the next six months.
