‘Don’t pay for bail’ – Nigerian Police boss

The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the Zone 2 Command, AIG Lawal Shehu, has warned people to desist from paying money to obtain bail.

He insisted that “bail is free and any police officer caught taking bribe will be dealt with”.

Describing corruption as a disease, AIG Shehu said “demanding or obtaining money is corruption and a serious offence that will not go unpunished”.

Four men have been arrested in the northern Nigerian city of Kano for allegedly carrying out a false marriage on Facebook, which the Islamic enforcement agency said had mocked Islam.Kano is among 12 northern Nigeria states where Sharia law operates and the Hisbah enforcement agency said Wednesday the wedding was perceived to have made a mockery of the institute of marriage.

“We arrested four men for organising a mock wedding on Facebook which has caused public outrage,” Hisbah’s chief Abba Sufi told AFP.

“We arrested them for making a mockery of the sanctity of the institution of marriage,” he said.

The police on Tuesday arraigned a 30-year-old salesgirl, Temitope Akinola, in a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing N2 million from Coca-cola depot.

Akinola, whose address was not provided, is charged with theft.

A 50-year old woman has been arrested by the police for allegedly buying a new born baby at the rate of N500, 000 at No. 3 Onyekwore street, Awada, Onitsha in Anambra state.

The suspect, Juliet Onweagba, was said to have conspired with a 49-year old woman, Edith Ewudo, to purchase the baby from one Ndidi Egeonu.

An Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court on Thursday arraigned two persons for allegedly stealing bags of biscuits valued at N108,000.

Olayiwola Segun, 27 (M) and Musa Rasidat, 22 (F), were arraigned before Chief Magistrate Adesoji Adegboye.

The defendants, whose addresses were unknown, are facing a charge of stealing.

Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Onitsha, Anambra State, Paulinus Akpotobo, and another senior officer have been arrested by the Onitsha Police Area Command for allegedly strangling a colleague, Emeka Ojei, to death.

The police in Lagos said it arrested three suspected traffic robbers in two separate operations around Ayobo/Ipaja areas of the state, less than 24 hours to Sallah holidays.

Police disperse protesting Shiites with teargas in Kaduna

There was panic, yesterday, when members of the Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky-led Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), otherwise known as Shi’ites, stormed the streets of Kaduna to protest the continued incarceration of their leader were dispersed by teargas fired into the air by the Police.

Several members of the group were injured during the protest.

El-Zakzaky and his wife, Hajiya Zeenat, among some other members of the group, are facing charges in a Kaduna State High Court and Magistrate Court, respectively, after being arrested in December 2015, following a clash with the military in Zaria.

An Abuja- based pastor has been arrested for alleged involvement in employment scam.

The Pastor of Spirit Embassy church located in Gwagwalada area of Abuja, who was working with one Alhaji, claimed they had connection and could get interested job seekers employment into the Nigeria Immigration Service.

25-year-old Egbunu Vincent Onuche said he collected between N150, 000 to N300, 000 from 16 people who indicated interest in the employment.
