Washington OKs $780m Javelin Missile Deal With Poland

The United States has approved the sale of Javelin Missile Systems and support equipment to Poland, a deal estimated at $780 million, as Warsaw strengthens its defences against growing threats from Russia.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) confirmed on Thursday that the Polish government requested 2,506 FGM-148F Javelin missiles and 253 Javelin Lightweight Command Launch Units. The shoulder-fired missile system is widely used against tanks, armoured vehicles, bunkers, and low-flying aircraft.

Alongside the missiles, the package includes simulation rounds, battery coolant units, toolkits, spare parts, and training support. U.S. government and contractor assistance will also be provided. The DSCA …

Poland Enters First Recession Since Communist Era – Official Data

Poland is experiencing its first recession since the end of the communist era more than three decades ago, an estimate by Poland’s statistics office showed on Friday.

The economy shrank by 8.9 percent in the second quarter because of the effects of the coronavirus lockdown, after a contraction of 0.4 percent in the first quarter.

Recession is defined two consecutive quarters of contraction.

Poland’s ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party has long said foreign-owned media outlets have meddled in Poland’s affairs and that Polish-owned media should have a stronger place. The accusation was leveled again in the recent presidential campaign, during which incumbent and PiS ally Andrzej Duda repeatedly accused foreign media or foreign-owned media of misinforming the public.

Poland is scheduled to hold a presidential election in just four days but nobody can say whether it will happen or not.

Sunday’s election date was set months ago but preparations have been thrown into disarray by the coronavirus pandemic and the lockdown Poland is under to control the spread of the virus.

Bitter fighting between the ruling conservative Law and Justice party (PiS) and its opponents is preventing the sides from coming together to find an alternative.

The Iraqi military has confirmed that 22 missiles were launched on the Ain al-Asad air base and a base in Erbil between 1:45 am and 2:15 am.

The military in a statement on Wednesday, however, said, “there were no casualties among Iraqi forces.”
