Scores Feared Dead In Vandalised NNPC Pipeline Explosion

Several people were feared dead yesterday  when a pipeline belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) exploded in the Ekoro area of Abule-Egba, Lagos State.

Following the incident, the residents of Ekoro in Abule-Egba/Ile-Epo area of the state were  thrown into pandemonium as multiple fire-explosions from the vandalised petrol pipeline rocked the area.

THISDAY gathered that the explosion, which started at about 9p.m. yesterday, was alleged to have been caused by activities of pipeline vandals in the area.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has expressed concerns about the rate at which oil major pipelines are sabotaged in Nigeria, stating that it rose by 115 percent in July 2019.

NNPC Acting Group General Manager, Public Affairs, Mr. Samson Makoji, quoting from July 2019 Monthly Financial and Operations Report (MFOR) of the oil corporation, said 228 points were broken on the country’s pipelines in the month under review.

The breached lines represented an awful increase from the 106 vandalised points recorded in June 2019, it added.

2 killed, 21 injured in Lagos pipeline explosion

Two persons were killed and 21 others injured on Thursday in a pipeline explosion at Ijegun, on the outskirts of Lagos.

No fewer than 100 persons were killed in a similar incident at Ijegun 11 years ago.

Lagos State Emergency Management (LASEMA) boss Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu however, put the number of the injured at 12.

Indigenous gas & power portfolio company Axxela Limited has put into operation its Greater Lagos IV (GLIV) gas pipeline network and the newly renovated Elegbata Sports Complex.

Greater Lagos IV (GLIV) is Axxela’s gas pipeline network, developed by its Gaslink Nigeria Limited subsidiary in partnership with the Nigerian Gas Marketing Company (NGMC).
