Dozens Killed As Fresh Violence Breaks Out In Papua New Guinea

No fewer than 18 people have so far been killed in Papua New Guineaโ€™s highlands, a region plagued by violence between local tribes and placed under ’emergency status’ by Prime Minister James Marape on Thursday.

According to the local police commander George Kakas, 13 men and five women were slaughtered on Tuesday close to the mining town of Porgera. It appears that the victims were killed using axes and machetes.

Eleven prisoners have been shot deadย following a mass jailbreak in Papua New Guinea and 36 others remain on the run, authorities said Tuesday.

The detainees escaped from Buimo prison in the Pacific nationโ€™s second-biggest city Lae after rushing a gate when a sick prisoner was being moved for medical treatment.

The group overwhelmed a duty officer and attacked him with a knife beforeย running from the prison compound.
