Pakistani authorities have deployed the army in northeastern Punjab province to aid in rescue and relief operations as the region grapples with a flood emergency triggered by heavy monsoon rains and the release of water from overflowing Indian dams.

A Pakistani court on Saturday sentenced a university professor to death for blasphemy under a law that critics say is often used to target minorities and liberal activists.

Junaid Hafeez, 33, was arrested in March 2013 for allegedly posting derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammed on social media.

Blasphemy is a hugely sensitive issue in conservative Muslim-majority Pakistan, where laws against it carry a potential death sentence. Even unproven allegations have led to mob lynchings and vigilante murders.

8 Drown In Pakistani Boat Accident

A rescue official on Monday reported that at least eight people which includes men, women and a child were killed after a boat capsized in eastern Pakistan.

Local rescue official Zafar Iqbal said the boat carrying around 30 people and goods capsized on the Sutlej river near the city of Dipalpur.

Iqbal added that 10 people had been rescued and that the search for those missing was ongoing.

It was not yet clear what caused the accident, he said.
