Major Gwarzar Gideon Orkar was a Nigerian military officer who in April 22, 1990, staged a violent coup against the government of General Ibrahim Babangida. Orkar and his Co-plotters took control of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) radio station, various military posts around Lagos. They also succeeded in taking control of Dodan Barracks, Lagos, which is then military headquarters and presidential residence. According to report, the then Military dictator General Ibrahim Babangida was present when the barracks were attacked but managed to escape by a back route.
