Huge Protest Ongoing In Algeria Against December Polls

In Algeria, people flooded the streets of the capital Friday to demand the overhaul of the political establishment and reject army-backed calls for presidential polls in December.The protest came on the eve of a deadline for presidential candidates to register.

Veteran leader Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigned in April under pressure from the street.

Having now entered its ninth month, the mass protest movement “is growing as we near the presidential election,” said Said Salhi of the Algerian League for the Defence of Human Rights.

Court Suspends Ongoing NNPC Job Recruitment

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the suspension of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation’s (NNPC) ongoing job recruitment pending determination of a suit filed by one Pelumi Olajengbesi.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Olajengbesi, a public interest lawyer, had commenced the enforcement of the fundamental rights of all potential applicants to set aside the recruitment by the NNPC on the ground that it was discriminatory. The recruitment had disqualified Nigerians above the age of 28 from applying for the vacant positions.

But Olajengbesi had faulted the age criterion, noting that it violated Section 3(e)(iv)
