Ese Brume Wins Nigeria’s First Medal In Tokyo 2020

Nigeria’s wait for a medal at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics has finally ended after Ese Brume won a bronze medal in the Olympic Long Jump event on Tuesday.

Africa Daily News, New York reports that Brum qualified for the final stage on Sunday morning after she leapt to a distance of 6.76m, 1cm more than the required mark to seal her place.

Brume, clinched the bronze medal with a 6.97m jump.

Semenya Switches To 200m In Search Of More Olympics Glory

Star South African 800-metre athlete Caster Semenya said on Friday she hopes to compete in the 200m at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

The 29-year-old is prohibited from defending her 800m Olympics title because she refuses to adhere to testosterone regulations set by governing body World Athletics.

Semenya, and other female athletes with differences of sexual development (DSD), are banned from competing in races between 400m and the mile unless they take testosterone-lowering medication.

The official Twitter accounts for football clubs, Olympics and Barcelona were hacked on Saturday, February 15, by “OurMine” a group known to hack social media accounts owned by prominent persons.

In a tweet which has long been deleted from the Olympics Twitter account, OurMine said, “Hi, we are OurMine. Everything is hackable.”

The group also disclosed that Neymar da Silva Santos Jr might be heading back to Barcelona as it said it read private messages that backed the claim.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics are expected to cost some 1.35 trillion yen ($12.6 billion), organisers said Friday, unveiling a final budget showing increased revenue balancing out extra costs including countermeasures against heat.

Construction work has been completed at Tokyo’s National Stadium, set to be the centrepiece of next year’s Olympic Games, the site’s owners said on Tuesday.

The Japan Sports Council said the final work had been completed on Thursday with just the final quality and safety checks remaining before the stadium opens next month.

Special Olympics Nigeria (SON) athletes returned victorious from the 2019 World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi with 63 medals.

At a welcome reception held in their honour on Tuesday in Lagoa, the athletes and officials were celebrated for being resilient, tenacious and exhibiting good sportsmanship.

At the World Summer Games, athletes from over 190 countries including Nigeria participated in Athletics, Badminton, Unified Basketball, Cycling, Unified Football, Swimming, Table Tennis and Unified Volleyball.
