Why FG Must Not Carry On With Proposed Okada Ban – ActionAid

ActionAid Nigeria (AAN) has asserted that the proposed nationwide commercial motorcycle (Okada) ban will worsen the poverty index in the country calling on the federal government to rescind the plan.

A statement by AAN Communications Coordinator, Lola Ayanda which was made available to Africa Daily News, New York, urged the Federal Government to rethink the decision.

Admitting that the government meant well in the proposed ban on motorcycles and mining activities, the organization called for caution.

The Buhari administration had explained that the intended proscription would reduce terrorists’ access to logistics and sources of funds.

The Coalition of Northern Groups has issued a warning against the ongoing seizure and destruction of Okada motorcycles which was ordered by the Lagos State Government, claiming that the action targets northern operators and therefore was ‘completely unacceptable’.

Ban on Okada in Anambra and the rising crime

When Governor Willie Obiano banned the activities of commercial motorcycle operators, popularly called OKADA in Anambra state, I wrote that the ban was ill informed, and would bring high rate of crime in the state.

The reason why the ban was ill timed was because there was no clear cut plan for integrating hundreds of those Okada operators into another trade, or any means of livelihood; and there was no plan to cushion the fallout of the ban.
