The Presidency, yesterday, said that significant progress has been recorded in the Ogoni Clean-Up project.

It said that since the Ogoni Cleanup commenced in January 2019, with 16 contractors moving to site, a total of 21 sites has so far been handed over to contractors by Hydrocarbon Pollution Restoration Project (HYPREP) under the Federal Ministry of Environment.

Recently, Ogoni people met in Zaakpon, Khana Local Government, Rivers State, for the unveiling of the Federal Government roadmap to the economic, peace and security development in Ogoniland, as it concerns the contentious Oil Mining Lease (OML) 11. Ogoni: MOSOP Gives Conditions For Oil Resumption

Ogoni ethnic nationality has released a memorandum on benchmarks for engagement between them and companies desiring to take over the operatorship of Ogoni fields in Oil Mining Lease (OML) 11.
This was contained in a draft document made available to journalists yesterday, by the Ogoni Oil and Gas Production Committee chaired by Professor Ben Naanen in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Controversy Trails $1bn Ogoni Cleanup Project

A leading international advocacy organisation on environment, Environmental Rights Action (Friends of the Earth), has faulted the ongoing $1 billion Ogoni cleanup exercise in the Niger Delta. It said the lack on seriousness on the part of the government is a major threat to its completion.

Executive director of the organisation, Godwin Uyi Ojo, while briefing newsmen on Thursday in Abuja, said the agency of government handling the project, Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), is yet to define clear parameters on how it intends to execute the project, despite the availability of over $100 million at its disposal.

Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike, has said the state government will complete and deliver the Ogoni-Andoni-Opobo-Nkoro Unity Road as part of the first year anniversary of his second term. 

To this end, the governor has directed the immediate release of additional funds to the contractor for the completion of work on the all-important road.

Insecurity in Ogoni: Wike deploys more security

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has declared that the State Security Council will deploy more security personnel to troubled Ogoni communities with a view to restoring peace.

Speaking on Saturday when he led the State Security Service Commanders to Kono-Boue and Kereken-Boue Towns in Khana Local Government Area, Governor Wike said that the security agencies have been mobilised to go after the criminal cultists operating in parts of Ogoniland.

Netherlands offers to support Nigeria on Ogoni clean-up

The Netherlands Ambassador to Nigeria, Ms. Marion Kappeyne, yesterday pledged her country’s readiness to support the Federal Government to clean-up decades-long oil spills in Ogoniland, Rivers State.

Ms. Kappeyne spoke in Ebube while inspecting ongoing remediation of one of the polluted sites in Ebube community, Eleme Local Government Area of the state.

According to her, the clean-up project was one of the Federal Government’s top priorities that needed the support of all.

Slain Ogoni leaders: Dutch court rules against Shell

It was a major victory yesterday for the wives of four slain Ogoni leaders. A Dutch court gave an interim ruling in favour the women who sued oil giant Shell.

The women, Esther Kiobel, Victoria Bera, Blessing Eawo and Charity Levula, sued Shell for its alleged role in the unlawful arrest, detention and execution of their husbands in 1995 by the administration of former military Head of State, the late Gen. Sani Abacha.

Shell, which was extracting oil from Ogoni, had argued that the District Court of The Hague lacked jurisdiction to entertain the suit. But the court ruled otherwise.…

Esther Kiobel, an Ogoni widow sues Shell in ICC

Esther Kiobel is testifying in court in The Hague, demanding compensation from the Netherlands-based firm.

She is among four women who accuse Shell of being complicit in the hanging of their husbands by Nigeria’s military in 1995. Shell denies the allegation.

The activists led mass protests against oil pollution in Nigeria’s Ogoniland.

The protests were seen as a major threat to then-military ruler Gen Sani Abacha, and Shell. They were led by author Ken Saro-Wiwa, who was among nine activists hanged by the military regime.
